Gisela Gästrin MD, oncologist and radiologist. The Mama Program as a method of screening for early detection of breast cancer was developed in Finland by radiologist Gisela Gästrin, who worked for a doctor's degree on the subject at University of Tampere in Finland in 1994. WHO and the Cancer Registry of Finland have participated in the research and in the practical implementation of the program in Finland since 1973.
Dr. Gästrin has, since the 1970's, presented research results and practical activity in health care at the world congresses of the International Union Against Cancer and updated material. Health care staff in different countries can use the Mama Program parallel to screening by mammography and screening by physical examination. (Cancer of the Breast, fifth edition, Saunders 2002).
